So far year 2021 is a mixed bag of events. We have the vaccine for Covid-19 but we also have more cases then ever and new virus variants. No wonder couples who planned to marry in 2021 and those who postponed their 2020 wedding worry if this year is the year they will finally be able to tie the knot in a big way.
Couples who didn't mind a small gathering or a virtual wedding managed to get married but those who want to celebrate with their whole family are still waiting. The Prime Minister suggested that we will most likely be attending weddings this summer as he expects things could be back to normal as soon as Easter: "It's my strong hope and belief that by the summer, one way or the other, whether by vaccination, which I hope and believe we'll have delivered by Easter, or by lateral flow testing, we'll be in a different world. “
Bear in mind that this statement was issued at the start of December and we are now in the third lockdown with record cases of Covid-19. Wedding season usually starts in the UK right after Easter which is on the 4th of April this year. This tradition might be very much ignored this year as people will prioritise being able to get married.
Since the lockdown is expected to last until March, we hope that by that time the case count will be much lower and it will be relatively safe to have a smaller wedding. Also by that time older people will be vaccinated and able to attend weddings without the risk.
If everything goes according to the government plan the weddings will go on. Most likely not exactly in the same way as before the pandemic but what this year taught us is we can't wait for the perfect timing. More spacious venues, bigger tables - we won't forget social distancing for a long time! But also people are desperate for human contact, for parties for going out out and dressing up so if you’re getting married this year or attending a wedding - get ready to PARTY!
There are 400,000 couples expected to get married in 2021, an increase of 60% on 2019. This was to be predicted with 2020 weddings postponed into 2021 plus all the couples who stood the test of lockdown(s) and got engaged in 2021 - huge CONGRATS!
